Night Fog Photos: A Dark and Foggy Night on The Docks

Night Fog Photos

We experienced a rare occurrence last night when stepping off of Banjo.  The humidity was around 85% and the temperature cooled after sunset enough to allow us some night fog photos.  We are including some of those night fog photos for your viewing enjoyment.

Settings

These shots were made in three main groups depending on which lens used to capture them.  The first group used the 18-55mm f/4-5.6 kit lens that came with our Canon SL2.  I played around with various settings and found that some pretty good results were obtained by sitting the camera on a fixed object.  The camera settings were established with a max 6400 ISO, shutter speeds of 1″- 5″ exposures, and an aperture of f/4 – f/5.

For the second group, we used our fixed 50mm STM f/1.8 (nifty fifty) lens.  I found this lens gave some of the best results due to the larger aperture.  Again I played around with shots ranging from 1″ – 1/8 with the aperture wide open at f/1.8.  A few shots were made with faster shutter speeds, but many of those were underexposed.  I wanted to keep my ISO under 6400 to reduce noise, but I did play around a little just to see what kind of effects higher ISO would yield.

The third group of shots were taken with a fixed 24mm f/2.8.  Again, playing around with the settings and the maximum aperture seemed to yield the best result.  I found that keeping perfectly still and using longer shutter times gave some interesting images as the fog would move slowly.
